A new step forward of Vietnam’s steel industry in the field of mechanical engineering
For the first time, Vietnam successfully produced special steel for heavy cars.
Vietnam’s steel industry has just recorded an important milestone when for the first time a domestic enterprise successfully produced S700MC high-strength structural steel according to the European standard BS EN 10149. This achievement not only affirms the ability to master modern metallurgical technology but also opens up opportunities to improve the localization rate of raw materials for the mechanical engineering industry and the automotive industry.
According to information published on June 19, Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel has become the first unit in Vietnam to successfully produce S700MC steel – a special steel line widely used in fields requiring high load capacity and mechanical strength.

S700MC steel – an important material for the automotive and industrial equipment industry
S700MC is a low-alloy hot-rolled steel plate with a minimum yield limit of 700 MPa, which is significantly higher than many conventional structural steels. Thanks to its good bearing properties and high resistance to deformation, this type of steel is applied in the production of heavy truck frames, bearing beams, car trailers, cranes, concrete pump trucks and many industrial equipment with large loads.
The highlight of S700MC steel lies in the balance between high strength and machinability. This material still ensures cold forming and good weldability, helping manufacturers reduce material thickness, optimize structural weight while maintaining durability and safety during operation.

In the context that the transportation and mechanical engineering industries are moving towards solutions to reduce equipment weight to improve fuel efficiency, high-strength steel such as S700MC is considered a strategic material with the potential to thrive in the future.
Mastering the technology of producing high-strength steel
The production of S700MC steel requires a high level of technology and the ability to strictly control the entire production process. From the stage of steelmaking, refining, casting billets to finished product rolling, they must be strictly managed to ensure mechanical and physical indicators according to international standards.
In order to successfully produce this steel, the enterprise has mastered many important technologies such as chemical composition design, microalloying, control of the precipitation process, Thermo-Mechanical Controlled Processing technology and management of the micro-organization of steel.
According to technical experts, the biggest challenge in the production of the S700MC is maintaining a balance between the strength and ductility of the material. If the steel has too high hardness but lacks ductility, the product will have difficulties in the forming process. Conversely, if the ductility is increased but the required strength is not maintained, the material will not meet the technical requirements for high-load structures.
Contributing to reducing dependence on imported steel
Vietnam’s successful production of S700MC steel is considered a significant step forward in the development strategy of the domestic materials and mechanical engineering industry.
In the past, many high-strength steels for the production of automobiles, lifting equipment and industrial buildings still had to be imported from abroad. The proactive domestic production not only helps reduce input costs for businesses but also improves the competitiveness of Vietnam’s supporting industry.

In addition, this achievement also creates conditions for domestic mechanical enterprises to participate more deeply in the global supply chain, especially in the field of manufacturing automobiles, industrial equipment and high-quality steel structures.
Promoting the development of high-tech steel lines
In addition to S700MC steel, the company has now developed many high-tech steel grades for the mechanical engineering industry such as prestressed steel, elevator cable steel and crane cable.
In the automotive sector, steel products for the production of tire and chassis bars such as SWRH82A, SWRH72A, S315MC to S650MC and SAPH440 have been put into production. In the coming time, the company plans to continue to develop new generation high-strength steel lines such as DP600, DP780 and DP800 to meet the increasing demand of the automotive industry.
At the same time, high-tech steel lines serving the oil and gas industry according to API 5L and API 5CT standards such as K55, J55, X60, X70 and X80 are also being researched and developed.
Prospects for Vietnam’s materials industry
The successful production of S700MC special steel is not only an achievement of an enterprise but also reflects the development of Vietnam’s metallurgical industry in the process of international integration. As the production capacity of high-tech steels is increasingly improved, Vietnam has the opportunity to gradually reduce its dependence on imported raw materials, and at the same time gradually affirm its position in the regional and global industrial supply chain.
