PrimeCoat® A109 is a water-based, chrome-free metal surface pretreatment chemical specifically developed for coiled aluminum and cold-rolled steel. Aluminum and zinc-alloy coated steel pretreatment with PrimeCoat A109 will provide excellent bonding with coil coatings, while also improving adhesive properties.
With advanced nanotechnology, PrimeCoat® A109 pretreatment chemical is an effective alternative to traditional chromate pretreatment systems, meeting modern production needs for greater safety, environmental friendliness, and suitability for continuous metal processing lines.
What is PrimeCoat® A109 Pretreatment Chemical?
PrimeCoat® A109 is a chrome-free pre-treatment chemical product for coiled metal, developed by AD Coil Coating Technologies BV. The product is used to improve the adhesion of coil coatings and enhance bonding properties on metal surfaces.
Unlike traditional chromate pretreatment chemicals, PrimeCoat® A109 contains no form of chromium. Furthermore, it is free of fluoride, formaldehyde, and SVHCs, meeting increasingly stringent environmental and chemical safety requirements in industrial production.
The bonding properties of PrimeCoat® A109 have been evaluated in combination with various coating systems such as single-layer systems, primer/topcoat systems, and powder coatings, including PVDF, polyester, and polyurethane. After exposure to wet conditions such as humidity testing, boiling water testing, and acid salt spray testing, the product achieved the highest quality performance in all tests.

Key advantages of PrimeCoat® A109
1. Water-based product, does not contain Chrome.
PrimeCoat® A109 is a water-based, chrome-free pretreatment chemical that aligns with the trend toward safer and more sustainable surface treatment technologies.
This product can replace traditional non-washing chromate pretreatment systems while still ensuring the necessary corrosion resistance and adhesion to metal surfaces.
2. Improve paint adhesion
One of the key advantages of PrimeCoat® A109 pretreatment chemical is its ability to improve adhesion between the metal surface and the coating.
For coil-coating systems, PrimeCoat® A109 helps create a stable base layer, supporting better paint adhesion on aluminum or zinc-coated steel surfaces.
3. Increase adhesive bonding strength
In addition to improving paint adhesion, PrimeCoat® A109 pre-treatment chemical also enhances the bonding properties of metal surfaces. This is particularly important in applications requiring high bond strength, such as building materials, color-coated aluminum sheets, color-coated galvanized steel, or components requiring bonding.
4. Good corrosion resistance
When used with the appropriate primer and topcoat system, PrimeCoat® A109 can provide good corrosion resistance, comparable to traditional no-wash chromate pretreatment systems.
According to technical specifications, the product can withstand acid and salt spray tests for 1,000 to 2,000 hours with corrosion levels less than 1 mm , depending on the paint system and application conditions.
5. The primer can be replaced in some paint systems.
PrimeCoat® A109 offers excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance properties, making it a suitable primer replacement in certain paint systems. This simplifies the process, optimizes costs, and increases production efficiency.
Which materials are suitable for using PrimeCoat® A109 pretreatment chemical?
PrimeCoat® A109 is developed for a wide variety of metal substrates, especially:
- Aluminum
- Galvalume® / AZ
- Rolled materials in continuous production processes
Thanks to its versatile applications, PrimeCoat® A109 is suitable for coil sheet, color-coated aluminum, color-coated galvanized steel, and coil-coating lines requiring high surface stability.
Applications of PrimeCoat® A109 in manufacturing
PrimeCoat® A109 is primarily used in the pre-treatment process before painting or bonding metal surfaces.
The product is suitable for the following processes:
- Pre-treatment of aluminum before painting
- Pre-treatment of galvanized steel
- Pre-treatment of zinc-aluminum-magnesium alloy coated steel
- Continuous coil-coating process
- Single-coat coating system for aluminum
- Primer/Topcoat System
- Powder coating
- Applications requiring high adhesion and corrosion resistance.
The PrimeCoat® A109 pre-treatment chemical has been evaluated against various coating systems such as PVDF, polyester, and polyurethane after exposure to wet conditions, moisture testing, boiling water immersion, and acid salt spray testing.
Instructions for using PrimeCoat® A109
Step 1. Prepare the surface.
PrimeCoat® A109 pretreatment chemical should be applied to a clean, dry metal surface. If the metal substrate is oily, the surface should be cleaned beforehand with a suitable alkaline detergent.
Proper surface cleaning ensures even distribution of the pre-treatment layer, thereby improving adhesion and corrosion resistance.
Step 2. Dilute the product.
The PrimeCoat® A109 pretreatment chemical needs to be diluted with demineralized water. Using demineralized water helps to limit impurities that affect the quality of the coating and the stability of the treatment solution.
Step 3. Coating method
In continuous metal strip processing, the preferred method is chem-coater roll-coat . Alternatively, jet or spray-press methods can also be used to create a wet film of precise thickness.
The wet film thickness typically ranges from 1–4 microns , depending on technical requirements and production line conditions.
Step 4. Drying process
The drying process is considered satisfactory when the water evaporates quickly and the coating reaches a touch-dry state immediately after passing through the drying area or oven.
With a wet film thickness of 1–4 microns, the peak metal temperature needs to reach a minimum of 40°C for rapid water evaporation and stable coating formation.
After drying, PrimeCoat® A109 should not be washed or cooled with water .
PrimeCoat® A109 coating volume
After drying, the PrimeCoat® A109 coating contains phosphorus. The phosphorus content can be measured using a suitable XRF analyzer.
The measured phosphorus content correlates with the total coating weight. The target coating weight for PrimeCoat® A109 is: 3–9 mg P/m²
When controlling coatings using XRF, it is essential to ensure that the equipment is properly calibrated for the type of metal substrate being processed in the line.
Appearance and preservation
PrimeCoat® A109 pretreatment chemical is a clear, colorless liquid.
Metals treated with PrimeCoat® A109 must be stored and transported in dry conditions or packaged appropriately. Storage and transport conditions should follow the metal supplier’s procedures to ensure the quality of the treated surface.
Why should you use the non-chrome PrimeCoat® A109 pretreatment chemical?
In the metal surface treatment industry, environmental, safety, and performance requirements are becoming increasingly stringent. The transition from traditional chromate pretreatment systems to chromium-free technology is an inevitable trend for many manufacturers of aluminum, galvanized steel, and color-coated steel.
PrimeCoat® A109 pretreatment chemical offers numerous benefits for businesses:
- Reduce reliance on traditional chromate technology.
- Improves paint adhesion and glue bonding.
- Increases corrosion resistance for metal surfaces.
- Suitable for continuous production lines
- Support in meeting environmental requirements and international standards.
- Suitable for application on aluminum, Galvalume®, and zinc alloy coated steel.
With its ability to be combined with a variety of coating systems such as PVDF, polyester, polyurethane, and powder coatings, PrimeCoat® A109 is a versatile pre-treatment solution for manufacturers of painted metal materials.
