Production, consumption and selling prices simultaneously increased sharply, reflecting the positive improvement of the domestic construction and infrastructure market.

According to records from the market, domestic steel demand is gradually regaining growth momentum thanks to the accelerated speed of public investment disbursement and the recovery of the civil real estate sector, especially in the southern region. This is considered an important factor to help the steel industry get out of the “freeze” period that has lasted for the past two years.

Overview of Vietnam’s Steel Industry

Data from the Vietnam Steel Association (VSA) shows that in the first two months of 2026, finished steel output will reach more than 5.4 million tons, up about 22% over the same period last year. The recovery momentum continued to be maintained in March and early April when construction steel consumption exceeded 1.5 million tons, up nearly 16%.

Notably, consumption has now exceeded production output in the short term, indicating that market demand is growing faster than supply. This reflects the positive sentiment of construction contractors and real estate businesses in the face of the expectation that the market will enter a new growth cycle.

In particular, construction steel and hot-rolled coil (HRC) continue to be the two product groups that play a leading role in the market thanks to stable demand from infrastructure projects and the manufacturing industry.

Output of construction steel and hot-rolled coil (HRC) remained stable and grew quite impressively

Steel prices turned sharply up

Along with the recovery in demand, domestic steel prices have also entered a new upward cycle. From the end of March to the beginning of April 2026, the market recorded the second consecutive bullish correction.

Since the beginning of the year, the price of construction steel has increased by about 1,800 – 2,000 VND/kg in many categories. Particularly, CB240 coil and D10 CB300 rebar recorded an average increase of 150,000 – 300,000 VND/ton depending on the brand.

Experts said that the current upward trend in prices is affected by many factors, including escalating input material costs, especially iron ore and coke prices on the world market. In addition, international logistics costs continue to increase due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, causing the global supply chain to face many risks.

With the current developments, many forecasts suggest that domestic construction steel prices may soon approach the mark of 16 million VND/ton in the second quarter of 2026 if demand continues to remain high.

Exports face a lot of pressure

While the domestic market is prosperous, steel exports are still under a lot of pressure from the international trade environment.

In the first two months of 2026, Vietnam’s steel exports will reach about 2.944 million tons, up 6.9% over the same period. However, the export value increased only slightly by 4%, indicating that the average export price is declining.

The main reason comes from the increase in the application of trade remedies by importing countries, while tightening emission standards through carbon tax mechanisms such as Europe’s CBAM.

Facing this pressure, many domestic steel enterprises are tending to “pivot” to the domestic market to take advantage of the strong recovery in construction demand. This is considered a suitable strategy in the context of the domestic market entering the peak period of infrastructure investment.

The steel industry benefits greatly from the recovery momentum of construction and the real estate market after a long period of silence

Positive growth prospects in 2026

Analysts believe that 2026 may become the year marking a new recovery cycle for Vietnam’s steel industry. The total output of finished steel products is forecast to reach about 33-34.5 million tons, equivalent to a growth rate of 8-10%.

The biggest driving force continues to come from large-scale public investment projects, the recovery of civil construction demand and the trend of restarting the real estate market after a long period of silence.

However, the steel industry will still face many challenges, including fierce competition from cheap imported steel, especially from China, and unpredictable fluctuations in world raw material prices.

In that context, the ability to control costs, optimize production and improve competitiveness will become a key factor determining the business efficiency of steel enterprises in the coming period.

At the beginning of the second quarter of 2026, the picture of Vietnam’s steel industry is gradually shifting to a more positive color. After a long period of downward pressure, the recovery of domestic demand is expected to become an important “puller”, opening up new growth opportunities for the whole industry this year.

See some chemicals for the steel industry here: https://dk-chemicals.vn/
See some of our other products here: https://dk-metalsurfacetreatment.com/san-pham-cong-ty-tnhh-hoa-chat-d-k/

After a long period of pressure from declining demand and international market fluctuations, Vietnam’s steel industry is showing clear signs of recovery from the beginning of the second quarter of 2026.
